दोन जिगरी दोस्तांचा उल्लेख करताना बऱ्याचवेळा दोघांचा उल्लेख बहुधा एकत्रितच होतो. इंग्रजी भाषेत बऱ्याच शब्दांच्या जोडय़ाही अशा जिगरी दोस्तासारख्या एकत्रच येतात.

मिल्या आणि दिल्या जिगरी दोस्त. दिवसभर गावभर भटकत चकाटय़ा पिटायच्या आणि रात्री उशिरा घराकडे परतायचं, हा त्यांचा नित्यनेम. एकमेकांच्या खांद्यावर हात टाकून ‘ये दोऽस्ती हम नहींऽ छोडेंगेऽ’ हे गाणं म्हणत घराकडे परतणारे मिल्या आणि दिल्या प्रत्येक गावात अनेकांनी पाहिले असतील. अर्थात गावातले लोकही त्यांचा उल्लेख ‘मिल्या आणि दिल्या’ असा जोडीनंच करतात. आपल्याकडे काळू-बाळू कसा जोड शब्दच झाला आहे. असेच अनेक भाषांमध्येदेखील आढळते. त्यांचा उल्लेखदेखील अगदी सहजपणे एकत्रच केला जातो. नेहमी एकत्र दिसणाऱ्या इंग्रजीतल्या काही मिल्या आणि दिल्यांचा आज आपण परिचय करून घेऊ.

*kith and kin – friends and relatives; सगेसोयरे.
उदा. 1)They wanted to keep alive the memory of their kith and kin who had died in the war.
2) She has returned to live in Pune, where she will be surrounded by her kith and kin.

* hum and haw – अळम् टळम्.
–  to take a long time to make a decision or before you say something.
CQF. 1) She hummed and hawed and finally accepted my invitation of the party.
2) After a lot of humming and hawing, he finally said yes to the plan.

 *go at it hammer and tongs (hammer म्हणजे हातोडा, tongs म्हणजे चिमटा)
– argue or fight with a lot of energy and noise.
CQF. 1) Again they quarreled last night- they went at it hammer and tongs till four o’clock in the morning.
2) The boss went at me hammer and tongs. I’ve never seen him so angry.

*at somebody’s beck and call – always ready to obey somebody’s orders.
उदा. 1) She had a dozen servants at her beck and call.
2) Working as a shop assistant means being at the customer’s beck and call all day.

* hue and cry – strong public protest about something.
उदा.The parents and students together raised a hue and cry about the plan to close the village school.
2) If the government raises taxes too much there’ll be a real hue and cry.

उजळणी आणि बिजळणी
1) kith and kin- friends and relatives.
2) hum and haw- take long time to decide.
3) hammer and tongs- fight with a lot of noise
4) beck and call- ready to obey orders.
5) hue and cry- strong public protest.
