So that is it from this game! A one-sided one in which the English have come out on top. We have two games for you on Saturday though and let us hope we have two crackers. The first one is a clash between Sri Lanka and Australia which will begin at 1030 local (0930 GMT). It will be followed by South Africa and Afghanistan which will start at 1330 local (1230 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!
England skipper, Eoin Morgan, says it is his back and it is sore at the moment and he hopes it settles down before the next game. Further adds Roy has gone for a scan and his results should be out in the next 48 hours. Stresses everybody in their squad is vital and they do not want any injuries and he hopes it is nothing series. Mentions they had a very good day at the office. Tells the bowlers stuck to their plans and continued building pressure during the middle overs. Credits Root for how he played and says he is an integral part of the team. Admits Archer, like everybody in his bowling unit is a pleasure to captain. Tells his plans have remained the same, the personnel have changed but the plans have remained the same. States the players who are left out will play a crucial part at sometime. Ends by saying they want to be in the best possible condition on Tuesday as they can't take the Afghanistan team lightly.
West Indies skipper, Jason Holder, says they did not have enough runs on the board and they lost wickets at crucial stages. States a couple of more partnerships would have been good for them. Further adds they did decently with the bat in Powerplay 1 but lost their way in the middle overs. Admits there were a few careless shots by their batsmen when they needed to dig deep and look to build partnerships. Reckons they were a touch down in pace and they did not get the short ball high enough but overall they did not have a lot to defend. Stresses they have a few days before their next game and they need to get fit for that. Ends by saying the past can't be controlled and they need to look ahead now and play good cricket.
Joe Root showed supreme form with the bat and he was handy with the ball as well. He hunted down two wickets and enjoyed a good day at work. After receiving his MAN OF THE MATCH award, Root says that he is really pleased and happy to be on the winning side. States it was a good toss to win as they got to make first use of a fresh pitch and then they did well to press home the advantage. Mentions it was just nice to get some time out in Powerplay 1 and it was good to find the gaps. Stresses there is not a lot of difference in batting at 3 and opening the innings. Further adds it was great to bat around Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes who played really well. Tells that you have to prepare for everything and then back yourself. Ends by saying he tried a few things with the ball and it's still work in progress. Ends by saying, he is finding different ways to contribute to the side.
For West Indies, their batting didn't put up much fight and they ended with a paltry total on the board. Defending such totals, the Windies would have hoped for some early wickets but that didn't happen as the pair of Joe and Jonny provided England with a rollicking start. Altogether it was a listless effort from them in all the facets of the game and they got thoroughly outplayed.
A thumping win for England! They have steamrolled West Indies by 8 wickets and 101 balls to spare. Injuries to Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan didn't bother them much as Joe Root stepped up to the plate and notched up his second century in this World Cup. First with Jonny Bairstow, he provided the chase with a solid beginning and then along with Chris Woakes, he raised a century stand to shut every door of hope for West Indies.

FOUR! Stokes finishes the game off with a boundary! Takes full toll of the Free Hit. Holder bowls it very full on leg stump. Stokes whips it past mid on and the ball races away. He walks up to Root and hugs him. All smiles in the England camp as THEY WIN BY 8 WICKETS and 101 balls to spare!
FREE HIT TIME!

NO BALL AND FOUR! Now it should be the last over of the game. Just the 4 needed now and Stokes has a Free Hit on the next ball to finish the game. Shortish and outside off, Stokes does not hit it right off the middle but gets it past mid off. The fielder does give it a chase but fails to stop the ball. Holder also has overstepped.
Jason Holder to bowl what could be the last over of the game!

100 for Joe Root. His second century in this World Cup! He becomes only the second Englishman to get 2 centuries in the same World Cup after Kevin Pietersen in 2007. This has been a gem of a knock from the Yorkshire man. He gets to 16th ODI hundred with a pull towards fine leg for a single. Joe has played that short with so much comfort today. He was asked to open the innings due to an injury to Roy and he stepped up to deliver. Has oozed class throughout this innings.

OUT! Not that this wicket changes the result of the game but West Indies will take it. Saves them some blushes. Short ball on off, Woakes looks to pull but does not time it well. It flies towards deep square leg. For a moment it looks like it will fall short but substitute, Fabian Allen, comes in front and takes a very good catch by going down low. Drinks Break! Jonny Bairstow has departed but he has set the platform for this chase. With just 118 required and 9 wickets in hand England are surely on the front foot. Joe Root is still out there and looking good to get one more 50-plus score in this World Cup. Though this wicket has given them some hope, West Indies need a miracle to win this game from here on. And here is a surprise... CHRIS WOAKES comes out to bat. He's quite handy with the bat and England are just showing off their batting depth here.

OUT! In the air... taken! West Indies finally have a wicket. Bairstow misses out on a half ton. His idea was right but just could not execute it. He makes room expecting another short ball. Does get one. He tries to upper cut it over the third man fence but does not get the distance. Carlos Brathwaite there settles under it and takes it. End of an entertaining knock by Jonny. Picking a one-dimensional bowling attack is hurting West Indies here. It's always handy to have variations in your bowling. The sameness of pace has allowed both the openers to settle in. Remember, when England were under the pump during the partnership between Hetmyer and Pooran, they used Joe Root to break that stand. Jason Holder also needs to come up with something different. Maybe, toss the ball to Chris Gayle.

Another piece of excellent running between the two. Not just the classy shots, the running between the wickets have also added pressure on the West Indian players. Back of a length ball on off, Root taps it down to backward point and takes off for a quick single. The fielder has a shy at the keeper's end but misses. The ball goes behind towards the fielder at mid-wicket who was around the edge of the circle but Root had got too far in front so they cannot take the second.

Such is England's batting talent. Their two crucial batsmen got injured but it has not mattered much to them. Cottrell starts with a bouncer. It is on the leg side, Bairstow ducks under it. There were some doubts whether it is a wide or not but the umpire is happy.
We are back for the chase! The West Indies players are in a huddle before they take their positions in the field. Jason Roy is injured and also he cannot bat before number 7. So Jonny Bairstow walks out with a new partner in Joe Root. Both are from Yorkshire so understanding should not be an issue. This is the first time that Root is opening for England in ODIs. Sheldon Cottrell to operate with the first new ball.
01st InningsWest Indies
It's a simple target for England. But the fitness of their two main batsmen, Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan, is unknown. That will have a say on the chase, if they don't bat. Still, the English team is full of utility batsmen and you can back them to scale down this total. Having said that, West Indies have been fairly aggressive with the ball, so it won't be a smooth sail. Let's wait and find out what happens in the run chase. Do join us in a short while.
Isa Guha is having a little chat with Jofra Archer. The pacer says this is just another game of cricket but it was nice to play against some old friends. States the pitch is not as quick as it looks and the cross-seam balls did get some purchase. Mentions he is enjoying his role and he is getting good support from the rest and it was a good effort by the boys. Further adds Gayle could have taken the game away and they were delighted to get him early. Ends by saying, the boys who walked out with injuries are pretty strong and he hopes they will be fit to bat.
Barring Chris Gayle and the pair of Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran, there wasn't much fight shown by the boys from the Caribbean. They kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and eventually got bundled out with 32 balls left. Mark Wood and Jofra Archer, the speed merchants of the English bowling, finished with a 3-wicket haul each and were too hot to handle.
A very professional bowling show by England! They were right on the money from the word go. Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer set the tone initially by bowling with a lot of fire. Liam Plunkett and Mark Wood didn't let the intensity drop and piled on the misery. Reduced to 55/3, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran raised an 89-run stand to revive the innings but then Eoin Morgan played the masterstroke. He brought Joe Root into the attack and the part-timer not only broke the dangerous stand but also got rid of Jason Holder.

OUT! Up goes the finger! Brathwaite can't believe he has been given out as he is down on his haunches. No reviews left though and he has to walk back. Archer gets his third. He goes short again and once again Brathwaite is cramped for room. He still goes for the pull. The ball goes off something and into the mitts of Buttler. The bowler appeals and the umpire after giving it a thought raises his finger. CB walks back disappointed and rightly so as replays show that was off the arm and not the bat or the glove. The last recognized batsman is out of here. However... Ultra Edge does show there is a spike as the ball passed the bat. So not sure what Brathwaite was disappointed about. Fifty for Pooran! His maiden ODI half ton and it could not have come at a crucial time. He needs to go on now as he is well set and has probably gotten use to the pace of the wicket. Nicholas gets there by easing it down to long on and getting to the other end.
Andre Russell walks out to bat next. He has a lot of time to settle in and then unleash the Russell-mania. It will be interesting to see what will be his approach though. No doubt he has the ability to tonk it from ball one.

OUT! Caught and bowled again! Root gets his second. He is over the moon at the moment. Jason Holder, on the other hand, will be kicking himself. That is probably the softest dismissal you will see. It is a completely harmless delivery, bowled down the leg side. Had Holder left it, it would have been called a wide, had he gone hard after it, he could have got a boundary. He does neither of the two but instead looks to work it on the leg side with soft hands. Closes the face of the bat early and gets a leading edge which lobs back to the bowler. Root won't drop those. Once again England manage to take two wickets in quick succession. West Indies pushed onto the back foot. Half their side back in the hut with 18 overs left.

The skipper walks out at a crucial time. West Indies have managed to get themselves back in the game and another partnership here could probably take them to a strong position.
Jason Holder is the new batsman.

OUT! Root has done the trick here. Joe has broken this budding partnership. It is a very soft dismissal for Hetmyer. Root bowls an off spinner around off, Hetmyer looks to force it towards long on but ends up hitting it uppishly to the left of Root. He moves there and takes a simple caught and bowled. He has this happy knack of breaking partnerships and has done that here as well. Hetmyer won't be happy looking back at that, he was batting very sensibly here but the three dots in the last over might have got into his head. The 89-run stand is broken and Root has done what exactly Morgan would have asked him to do.

The bails are off! England start celebrating but wait, it is cut short as it is Buttler's gloves that takes it off. Shorter and outside off, Pooran cuts it towards the point. The LED bails light as he connects with the ball. Wood collects it and starts celebrating but then Buttler indicates it is his gloves.
Buttler has taken the bails off. Without the ball though. Pooran was into his cut and at the very moment, Buttler by mistake disturbs the stumps with his glove. The umpires have a look as to when Buttler did that as if he has done it before the shot is played then the ball won't be counted. The replays confirm that it was done after the shot was played.
Joe Root is into the attack now. He replaces Stokes. The two dashing West Indian southpaw have steadied the ship nicely here. Can Root break the partnership? He has a knack of doing that.

Drinks break. England in a strong position after removing the top three West Indian batsmen. Chris Gayle showed a bit of aggressive intent but nothing much from the other batsmen so far. The English bowlers have bowled with a lot of fire and venom and apart from one dropped catch, they have been tidy in the field also. DROPPED! Gayle is dropped! Massive moment. You don't drop the beast. Gayle winds up for a big heave across the line to a length delivery but gets a big top edge. Wood rushes forward from third man, doesn't judge it well, goes down low to catch the ball but it spills out. The batsmen cross for a run.

OUT! Timber! A surprise delivery, this. Woakes changes his length to go full and spears it in on middle at 140 kph. Lewis' feet go nowhere as he tries to flick but misses the ball completely. It brushes his pads and goes behind to rattle the stumps. Played all over it, Evin. Terrific start for England.

Quick run taken from Gayle, yes you read that right. He just bunts a full ball down to mid off and scampers across to the other end. The fielder there didn't have the best of throws at the non-striker's end. The giant is off the mark on the 10th ball he faced.

Time to get underway. Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis, the power-duo for West Indies, are in the middle to open. Chris Woakes runs in with the first new ball. He has three slips in place. Here we go...
The players from both sides are lining up in the middle to sing their respective national anthems. The conditions are heavily overcast at the moment and we are expecting some rain spells during the course of this match. For the moment, it's good to go.
West Indies (Playing XI) - Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis (in for Darren Bravo), Shai Hope(WK), Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder(C), Andre Russell (in for Ashley Nurse), Carlos Brathwaite, Sheldon Cottrell, Shannon Gabriel (in for Kemar Roach), Oshane Thomas.
England (Unchanged Playing XI) - Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(C), Jos Buttler(WK), Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Liam Plunkett, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.
West Indies skipper, Jason Holder says that he would have liked to bowl first as well on a fresh pitch but reckons that it's an opportunity for his guys to get some runs first. Mentions that they have planned well for this match and are up for it. Considers adapting to different situations will be the key. Informs about the three changes, Evin Lewis, Andre Russell and Shannon Gabriel come in the playing XI.
England skipper, Eoin Morgan says that the wicket has been under the cover and there will be moisture and they want to take advantage of that. Adds that it's all about turning up on the day and perform and considers West Indies a tough challenge. Informs that they are going unchanged.
Toss - Up goes the coin, Jason Holder calls it wrongly and ENGLAND WILL BOWL!
Pitch report - One of the biggest playing areas in this part of the world. There is a little bit of wind blowing across the stadium. Ian Bishop says that the surface has been under the cover. Adds that it's relatively hard and the grass has been cut. Feels there will be moisture. Mentions that the hardness will work in favour of the pacers, especially the shorter deliveries which will have good bounce and carry. Points out that there are big square boundaries and that will come into play.
No rain. On that great note let me welcome you all for Match 19 of this World Cup between England and West Indies in Southampton. It's been a week marred by poor weather but thankfully it has cleared up in time as it rained earlier in the morning. The home side takes a step forward in their campaign after a thumping win over Bangladesh whereas the Caribbean boys would like to improve their position in the points table by playing their aggressive brand of cricket. Both teams are known to be fearless in their approach and that makes this battle an interesting one. What will happen when fire meets fire? Stay tuned to find out...
