Canada beat Ireland by 12 runs

nd Innings Ireland
Right then, we have now seen three T20 World Cup debutants win a game and the last two wins have been truly remarkable. Such is this format that the minnows have a real chance of beating the big guns and it makes for such an entertaining and exciting watch. Next up, we have a couple of teams who will be playing their first games of the tournament. First up, it will be New Zealand getting their campaign underway against Afghanistan in Guyana. That clash will begin on Saturday, 8 June at 5 am IST (11.30 pm GMT). Also, Bangladesh will play their fist match against Sri Lanka in Dallas beginning at 6 am IST (12.30 am GMT). You can join us early for the build-up of both those games but until then, take care and goodbye.
Saad Bin Zafar, the captain of Canada says that it's a proud moment for his team. Credits Shreyas Movva and Nicholas Kirton for their great batting. Adds that the bowling unit stepped up and delivered. Shares that they gambled with an extra spinner and both him and Junaid Siddiqui did a good job. Ends by saying that they want to enjoy the win and go with confidence against Pakistan in their next game.
Ireland's skipper, Paul Stirling says that it is a tough loss and they were slow to begin with. Adds that it was certainly gettable and it was just a slow start with the bat that cost them and need to improve in all aspects of the game and hopefully put on a better performance in Miami. Mentions that they don't want to look too far ahead and want to focus on the next game which is a big one.
Nicolas Kirton is the Player of the Match for his attacking and momentum shifting knock 49 runs. He says that it was important to get over the line after the first game. Adds that it was crucial for him to get in the middle and the wicket was pretty good to bat on except for an area in the middle. Shares that the partnership with Shreyas Movva was very important. He hopes to grow from strength to strength and to do well in the next game. Mentions that the spinners got some purchase off the pitch and they executed the plans well. Ends by sharing that they want to take one day at a time and not think too much further.
Presentation time…
Having opted to bowl first, Paul Stirling and his men seemed to be in control as they suffocated the Canadian batters in the first 10 overs but didn't biowl particularly well. This eventually cost them as it allowed Canada to post a defendable total. Still, 138 to win and one would back Ireland to chase it down but their openers once again failed to give them a positive start. Andy Balbirnie looked decent but Stirling was just not in the game at all and soon enough, the top order crumbled. They were down 59 for 6 at one point before George Dockrell and Mark Adair led the fightback. It was always a bridge too far and in the end, they ended up a few runs short and have now gone on to lose back-to-back games.
Defending 137 runs on a pitch that wasn't the easiest to bat on, Canada started brightly with the ball as they managed to stop Paul Stirling from getting away and eventually, that brought them his wicket as well. tThey were miserly in the Powerplay and then their spinners ruled the roost in the middle overs. Skipper, Saad Bin Zafar and especially Junaid Siddiqui bowled really well and picked up a wicket each to pile on the pressure. Dilon Heyliger too bowled a lovely spell in the middle overs and picked up two wickets and the pacers closed things out pretty nicely when things got a bit tight towards the end. They will now look to build on this and go into their next match against Pakistan full of confidence.
HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE ONCE AGAIN IN THE 2024 MEN'S T20 WORLD CUP! On back-to-back days, two associate nations have defeated two Test-playing nations, both in Group A and Canada have picked up their maiden win at the Men's T20 World Cup. This is also the second-time they have beaten a Test-playing nation in a T20I game, both of those wins coming against Ireland who will be gutted and have been handed two successive losses here.

Welcome back for the chase. The players and umpires return to the park. Andy Balbirnie and Paul Stirling stride out to open for Ireland. Kaleem Sana has the ball in hand for Canada. Here we go!
…THE RUN CHASE…
Ireland bowling was tidy and they kept picking wickets at regular intervals before Kirton and Movva came to the crease. Craig Young and Barry McCarthy chipped in with two each while Gareth Delany and Mark Adair snappped one apiece. Right then, Ireland need 138 to get their first win of the tournament and keep thier hopes alive of going further. Can the Irish do it or will be Canadian bowlers spring in a surprise? We shall find out. Join us in a bit for the second essay.
Nicholas Kirton is down for a chat. He says that the pitch was a bit up and down and reckons they have a defendable total on the board. Adds that he feels he could have done a bit more but is happy with the overall team performance. Mentions that they spoke before the innings started about 130-140 being a defendable score and have achieved it.
A brilliant 75-run fifth wicket stand between Nicholas Kirton and Shreyas Movva has taken their side to a competitive score of 137 for 7 in their 20 overs. Having sent into bat first, Canada were reeling at 53 for 4 when Kirton and Movva joined hands and steadied the innings for their side. Kirton was the aggressor with 35-ball 49 while Shreyas Movva made 37 off 36. The wicket is two paced and slighty tricky. Canada have done well to get this score and the onus will be on their bowlers to defend it.

Paul Stirling, the Ireland skipper says that it’s a must win game for them and they hope to keep Canada to a chasable score. Adds that the wicket has changed a bit and might be some less lateral movement than the previous game. Ends by sharing that Ben White misses out and a pacer replaces him.

They further add that it's the same wicket that was used for the India-Ireland game but the pitch is rolled a bit and might play better. They share that the sun is shining bright and the captain winning the toss should bowl first.
Canada, on the flip side, played the opening game of the tournament and were competitive against USA. Batting first, Canada made a solid score of 194 on the back of runs from Navneet Dhaliwal, Nicolas Kirton, and Shreyas Movva. Canadian bowlers kept it tight till the 10th over of the second innings but Aaron Jones and Andries Gous from USA took the attack on them and the game slipped away from Canada. Let’s see who comes on top and gets off the mark in the competition. Toss and team news in a bit. Stay tuned!
Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of Match 13 in the ICC T20 World Cup, 2024. Canada are taking on Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Both sides are coming off losses and will hope to put a better performance which gets them their first win of the competition. The pitch at New York hasn’t been the best and the batters have found it hard to get the runs. Ireland played India at this ground at few days back and were bundled out for just 96. Only Gareth Delany could manage a significant score while the rest of the batting did not turn up. Mark Adair and Ben White took a wicket each but they runs were never going to be enough. Paul Stirling and his men will want put that game behind and start afresh against Canada.
…MATCHDAY…
It is now time for a Trans-Atlantic battle as Canada take on Ireland in Match 13 of the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Two teams who have already played a game each and have endured defeat and this game springs up a perfect opportunity to let go of the blemishes and usher in a new era with a win and get two crucial points on the board as well. Canada played against their rivals and hosts USA in the curtain raiser of 2024 T20 World Cup and after a stellar effort with the bat, they failed to capitalize with the ball and ended up on the losing side. The likes of Navneet Dhaliwal and Nicholas Kirton starred with the bat and Shreyas Movva played a fine cameo too and the highly-tauted Aaron Johnson couldn't convert a brisk start into something spectacular. Still, 194 runs was a huge total but their bowlers lacked inventiveness and the fielding was sub par and even after doing reasonably well in the first 10 overs, they conceded runs at a rate of knots in the latter stages and the opposition chased down the target with 14 balls to spare. Ireland on the other hand played against a strong Indian unit in their first game and that too at this very ground. So far, the Nassau County Stadium has witnessed a couple of matches and in neither of those two matches has the team batting first crossed the 100-run mark. The pitch has been up for debate with some regarding it as borderline dangerous but it seems to have just leveled the playing field in terms of a bowling perspective. Ireland were bundled out for 96 runs and had no answer to the Indian pacers but against the spinners it was a different game and on this particular ground, it seems if you can escape the new ball unscathed, there are runs to be scored. The highly experienced opening duo of Ireland, Andy Balbirnie and Paul Stirling will be eager to lead from the front and they do have a well-rounded pace attack consisting of the likes of Mark Adair and Joshua Little that can really cause damage to a somewhat inexperienced team like Canada. All in all, there's a lot to play for and neither side will back down from this challenge. Who are you backing for the win?
