सगळ्याच भाषांमध्ये काही फसवे शब्द असतात. त्यांचा अर्थ असतो एक आणि आपल्याला वाटतो दुसराच. कधीकधी त्यामुळे भलताच घोटाळा व्हायचीही शक्यता असते. इंग्रजीमधल्या अशा काही शब्दांचा मागोवा- आमच्या शाळेत नववी, दहावीतली वात्रट मुलं खालच्या वर्गातल्या मुलांची प्रश्नोत्तर परीक्षा घ्यायची. ‘‘एका बाईचं पाटील नावाच्या माणसाशी लग्न झालं तर ती कोण झाली?’’ ‘‘पाटलीण’’. ‘‘डॉक्टरशी लग्न झालं तर?’’ ‘‘डॉक्टरीण’’. ‘‘नाईक नावाच्या माणसाशी लग्न झालं तर?’’ ‘‘नायकीण’’. हे उत्तर येताच मोठी मुलं खोऽखोऽ हसत सुटायची. उत्तर देणारा बारक्या खजील व्हायचा. त्याला ‘नायकीण म्हणजे तमासगिरीण’ हे काही कळायचं नाही. भाषेत असे अनेक फसवे शब्द असतात. त्यांचे अर्थ वाटतात एक आणि असतात भलतेच.आता पुढील शब्द पहा आणि अर्थाचे अंदाज करा.artless - कलेतलं न कळणारा?journeyman - सततचा प्रवासी?bootlegger - पायात बूट चढवून तयार?busybody - सतत बीझी असणारा?simpleton - साधाभोळा?high tea - उंची चहा?असे अर्थ प्रथमदर्शनी तुमच्या मनात आले असतील तर सावधान ! या शब्दांचे योग्य अर्थ आणि त्यांचे वाक्यात उपयोग आता समजावून घेवू. artless - simple, natural and honest; not wanting to deceive.उदा. 1) I like young children for their artless sincerity. 2) The artist's sister was an artless young woman. journeyman - a person who has training and experience in a job but who is only average at it. - competent but not outstanding.उदा. 1) He's a journeyman actor who is unlikely to become big star.2) 25 Years of experience, but he is a journeyman teacher.3) No journeyman any more ! what I want is an expert. bootlegger - one who makes or sells illegal alcohol.उदा. 1) The police chased the bootlegger but was unable to catch him.2) I often saw him in the market. But I never knew that he was a bootlegger. busybody - a person who is too interested in what other people are doing.उदा. 1) The retired school teacher is a boring busybody. 2) Busybody is a person who never minds his own business. simpleton - a person who is not intelligent and can be tricked easily. उदा. 1) Don't put those books on the floor, you simpleton.2) People worship him as a saint, but he is just a simpleton.n high tea - a meal eaten in the early evening which includes cooked food and tea.उदा. 1) She invited me for discussion and a high tea.2) On most Sunday evenings I watch films and enjoy high tea with my friends. इंजिनीयिरगच्या मुला-मुलींचा नाटक बसवणारा ग्रुप. त्यांनी नाटय़प्रशिक्षण कार्यशाळा घ्यायची ठरवली. त्याविषयी चर्चा चाललेल्या. ग्रुपमधल्या एका कन्येला कुठंतरी वाचलेला ‘नाटकशाळा’ हा शब्द आठवला. तिला वाटलं की theatre workshop साठी हा मराठी शब्द आहे. तिनं मित्राला सांगितलं. सुदैवानं ‘नाटकशाळा’ चा नेमका अर्थ माहिती असलेल्या मित्रानं तिला रोखलं. अर्थ कळताच ती मुलगी अवाक् झाली.
