AUS VS NZ, ICC 2023 Match 27 – Full Scorecard, Commentary, Squad

02
nd Innings New Zealand
Right then, we have had a couple of nail-bitters in a row and the World Cup now seems to be kicking into fifth gear. Australia are on a steep rise while New Zealand find themselves on the verge of a dogfight for a semifinal place. A lot of action is still left on this double-header Saturday as the chase is on in the other game. Bangladesh are chasing 230 for victory against Netherlands in Kolkata and you can simply switch tabs and catch our coverage of that game. Cheers!
Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, says that it was an awesome game. Adds that he had to remember that he was a player and not a spectator in the crowd. Mentions that New Zealand kept coming at them. On Travis Head, he says that he was away for the last five weeks and the intent shown by him and David Warner was pleasing to see. Adds that Head surprised them all with his knock. Reckons that it was a good wicket and they bowled well in patches. Credits Marnus Labuschagne for the way he threw himself around in the field to save runs. Ends by saying that it is great to win four games in a row.
New Zealand's skipper Tom Latham says that it was a fantastic game. Adds that there were ebbs and flows throughout. Shares that Australia caught them on the back foot with the way they batted early on. Feels that it was about taking wickets but at the same time, containing the runs. Reckons that they were there and thereabouts in the game. On Glenn Phillips' bowling, he says that he bowled well under pressure and got wickets at crucial times. On Rachin Ravindra he says that it was one of the better knocks you will see while chasing. Appreciates the support from the crowd in Dharamsala. Ends by saying that they will be up to watch New Zealand play in the Rugby World Cup final and cannot wait to watch the game.
Travis Head is the Player of the Match for his quickfire ton early in the game. He starts by saying that it is nice to be back. Adds that it was good to contribute and get the win. Shares that he had only a couple of hits leading up to the game. States that it was like the World Test Championship final where he had off for 6 or 7 weeks. Reckons that his fielding is something he would like to sharpen in the coming days. On his partnership with David Warner, he says that they play together well and complement each other well. Further adds that they try to be as positive as they can.
The Presentation ceremony…
Earlier in the game, Tom Latham won the toss and opted to bowl first on a track that looked devoid of some grass and paid the price as the opening pair of David Warner and Travis Head put on 175 runs for the first wicket. Travis Head went on to score a stellar ton on his World Cup debut and then quick and useful contributions from the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis and skipper Pat Cummins meant that Australia got close to the 400-run mark. For New Zealand, their main man upfront, Matt Henry had a poor outing with the ball and Lockie Ferguson got injured after bowling a few overs. It was Glenn Phillips who proved to be their best bet with three big wickets and then Trent Boult cleaned up the lower order at the death. Coming to the chase, it was topsy-turvy all the way through but those wickets at the right moments meant, New Zealand had a tailender batting at the other end and they made sure, they saved every single run in the field to seal the win by 5 runs.
New Zealand and heartbreaks is quite the story at World Cups and the trend continues here as well. They had their task cut out with the bat and they gave it a real go but it just wasn't enough. Openers, Devon Conway and Will Young started briskly but got out in succession and then the mantle was taken on by an in-form Devon Conway and young Rachin Ravindra who really got the Kiwis into a position of promise. Mitchell got out after a half-century but Ravindra went all the way to score his second ton in this World Cup. They did lose a few wickets at the wrong time and James Neesham had to pull off a miracle to get them near the finish line but he was undone by some impeccable fielding in the final over, handing New Zealand their second-successive loss.
After putting on a mammoth score of 388 runs on the board, all Australia needed early wickets and after a bit of toiling, they did get two quick wickets. It was Josh Hazlewood with the double-blow but after that, they were put under the pump for a while. They knew, with every wicket they got, the scoreboard pressure would mount on the opposition and Adam Zampa proved to be the star as he picked up three big wickets. Skipper Pat Cummins too changed the game with a couple of smart wickets in the last 10 overs but it got too close for comfort in the end and a couple of sensational fielding efforts in the deep were required for the Aussies to get over the line.
AUSTRALIA ARE ALIVE, THE WORLD CUP IS ALIVE AND ODI CRICKET IS WELL AND TRULY ALIVE! What a finish to the highest-scoring game ever in World Cup history and it is Mitchell Starc and the fielders who hold their nerves right at the death to seal a memorable win.
49.6
Mitchell Starc to Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Starc has done it for Australia! Switches to 'round the wicket and delivers it on a fullish length, outside off, Lockie Ferguson gives himself room but fails to get the elevation and can only hit this one along the ground towards cover. Joy on the faces of Mitchell Starc and the rest of the Aussies. Australia win this thriller by 5 runs!
A hobbling Lockie Ferguson is the last man in. A six will win it for New Zealand, anything else and Australia will take the win.

W
Mitchell Starc to James Neesham, OUT! RUN OUT! Body blow for New Zealand! A 'Superman' effort by Josh Inglis to dismiss James Neesham! Mitchell Starc misses his length as he hurls a knee-high full toss, at the batter, James Neesham gets cramped for room and gets hurried as he tries to heave it away. He does not time it well and has no option to return for the second run. Marnus Labuschagne swoops in quickly and releases the throw towards the batting end. Josh Inglis grabs it cleanly and stretches out with his left hand to disturb the woodwork. The replays show that the full-length dive by James Neesham was not enough for him to reach his ground.
Is that a run-out? It looks like James Neesham might be short of his crease and that could be game over for New Zealand. The replays roll in and they show that Josh Inglis did a great job of diving and getting to knock off the bails in time. Neesham's dive didn't save him and the decision of OUT comes up on the big screen.
49.4
2
Mitchell Starc to James Neesham, Sensational save in the deep by Marnus Labuschagne! On a length, slanting in, on middle and leg, James Neesham goes deep in his crease and slogs it towards deep mid-wicket where Marnus Labuschagne throws himself to his left on the boundary and keeps the ball in play. Two runs taken.
49.3
2
Mitchell Starc to James Neesham, Great stop by Glenn Maxwell! Right up there, on off, James Neesham drills it hard down the wicket. Mitchell Starc to James Neesham, FIVE WIDES! Oh, dear! Mitchell Starc, what have you done? Tries to zone in at the toes, on a fullish length but the angle takes the ball past James Neesham and the ball rears off the footmark to go over the leaping Josh Inglis for a boundary. Bonus runs for New Zealand.
49.1
1
Mitchell Starc to Trent Boult, A direct hit and Trent Boult was gone! Strac charges in from around the wicket and goes on a fullish length, at the stumps, Trent Boult moves leg side and stabs it towards extra cover. He sets off for a single and the ball comes at a good height for Marnus Labuschagne but he fails to hit the target at the non-striker's end.
Right then, 19 needed from 6 balls but Trent Boult will face the first delivery of the final over. Australia will have one less boundary rider for the final over. Can Mitchell Starc defend 18 runs and get his side the win? Or will we see shades of 2015? Let's find out.
48.6
Josh Hazlewood to James Neesham, Good finish to the over from Josh Hazlewood! Another on a yorker length, outside off, James Neesham tries to get underneath the delivery but fails to do and can only hit it back to the bowler.

Josh Hazlewood to Trent Boult, SIX! A valiant effort but Marnus Labuschagne has stepped on the boundary for a maximum! Josh Hazlewood serves this one full but in the slot, around off, Trent Boult clears his front leg and swings through the line. Marnus Labuschagne at long on, makes the mistake of charging in and has to back track eventually. He completes the catch but fails to release the ball before making contact with the ropes.
Is that a maximum? Marnus Labuschagne's body language certainly suggests that it is. The umpires go upstairs and the replays do show that Labuschagne's back heel was on the ropes just a fraction before he let go of the ball and it will be called a maximum.
Josh Hazlewood (8-0-57-2) is back on to bowl the crucial penultimate over.
47.6

45.1
Mitchell Starc to James Neesham, Starts a new spell from over the wicket, full and spearing in at the stumps James Neesham goes for a swipe across the line but gets hurried as he gets an inside edge that rolls to short fine leg.
44.6
Pat Cummins to Matt Henry, Excellently bowled from Pat Cummins and New Zealand now need 58 runs to win from the final five overs. Takes pace off again but loops this one up on leg stump, the ball dips a lot on the batter and Matt Henry is unable to get any bat on it. Pat Cummins stays over the wicket and takes pace off this one as well, bowling it a touch fuller and pushing it well across the off stump. Rachin Ravindra has to reach out a bit and force the lofted shot but he isn't quite in control and ends up skying it toward wide long off. st Innings Australia
Welcome back for New Zealand's reply. Some last words being spoken by Pat Cummins in the Australian huddle before they spread out to take their respective field positions. It will be the left-hand right-hand combination of Devon Conway and Will Young to open the innings for New Zealand. Mitchell Starc has the new ball in hand and will start the proceedings for Australia. He has two slips in place to start with. Off we go…
… THE RUN CHASE …
Right then, Australia would have loved to cross 400 given the platform laid by the openers. However, the surface has shown signs of slowing up, meaning it should not be easy for New Zealand to chase this down. The Kiwi batters have a mountain to climb and if they pull this off, it will be the highest chase ever in ODI World Cup history. Do join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.
Travis Head, the centurion is down for a chat. He says that it is nice to be back with the boys and get a game. On his hand, he says that it is doing nice and he is glad to be back. Mentions that it was a very good wicket and he and David Warner looked to take their chances and build a big partnership as well and 388 is a big score on the board. Adds that at the fag end of his innings, the ball did start to grip a bit and it was getting slightly harder to score with ease.
Having opted to bowl first, Tom Latham would have hoped his new-ball bowlers would be able to take advantage of the movement on offer early in the morning. It did not go according to plan for them, as both Trent Boult and Matt Henry were taken to the cleaners early on. It put them off their lines and lengths and leaked boundaries consistently. The third seamer, Lockie Ferguson, too, was taken for plenty in his first spell and could not bowl much to a right Achilles issue. As the field restrictions were lifted, spinners came on and Tom Latham quickly understood that it was the way to go on this surface which had started to slow up. Glenn Phillips led the fight back for New Zealand, accounting for Australia's top three batters and he found good support from Mitchell Santner who got into the act as well. At the start of the last 10 overs, New Zealand had high hopes of restricting Australia to an even lower total but they were stalled by cameos from Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis and Pat Cummins and dropping as many as 4 catches did not help either. That said, Trent Boult showed his class at the death with three wickets in the penultimate over before Matt Henry wrapped up the innings to keep New Zealand under 390.
After Australia were inserted into bat, it was a dream start for them. Returning to the side from an injury layoff, Travis Head set the tone for the Aussies and made his intentions clear right away. His opening partner, David Warner, followed suit and put the pressure back on the Kiwi pacers. The duo amassed 118 runs in the first powerplay and looked at utmost ease during the first ten overs. Warner got out on 81, but Head carried on and notched up a hundred on his World Cup debut. After the departure of the two openers, Mitchell Marsh was not able to continue the momentum, as was Steven Smith, and both departed trying to break the shackles. At 274-5, Australia seemed to be losing their way, but Glenn Maxwell scored 41 runs off just 24 balls to give his side some much-needed impetus. After that, it was absolute carnage from Josh Inglis and Pat Cummins with a 62-run stand which took Australia over 380. At that stage, they were on course for 400 but a flurry of wickets towards the end meant they had to settle for 388.
Australia have been bowled out for 388! Not many would have seen this coming when Pat Cummins and Josh Inglis were hitting boundaries for fun. The Aussies lose their last four wickets for just one run to be rolled over inside the 50 overs but this is still an imposing total. As far as New Zealand are concerned, they threw punches throughout to hang in there and have finished strongly with the ball.

Drinks break! This has been a good fightback by New Zealand. Glenn Phillips has led the way for them, accounting for all three wickets while the other spinners have done a good job of keeping things quiet from the other end. As far as Australia are concerned, they have not been able to keep the momentum going ever since the departure of the other two openers. Mitchell Marsh, in particular, has struggled to get going and will have to get a move on soon. An interesting phase of the game coming up.

Tom Latham and New Zealand have received an official warning from the on-field umpires for the throws coming in from the deep. Done and dusted with the pre-match rituals and it is now time to get this Trans-Tasmanian rivalry underway! The two umpires and the Kiwi players take their positions on the field. And, it will be a rejuvenated Travis Head who will open the batting alongside an in-form David Warner for Australia. Matt Henry has the new ball in hand and is raring to make it talk. A couple of catchers in place in that slip cordon. Let's play…
We are inching closer to the first ball of the game but first, the two sets of players will line up for their respective national anthems. It will be the national anthem of New Zealand first followed by the national anthem of Australia.
Australia's captain Pat Cummins says that they are fine batting first. Mentions that it looks like a good wicket and it might have something early for the bowlers. Feels that the surface might slow up later. Informs that Travis Head returns to the side and Cameron Green is the unfortunate one to miss out. Adds that anyone in their squad has a role to play but Head has had an awesome record. States that New Zealand are a side they know really well and the Kiwis know them well as well. Reckons that it is about how they can play today. Also says that they have not played a day game and will have a first look with the bat.
Tom Latham, the captain of New Zealand, says that they will bowl first and adds that it looks like a reasonable surface and there might be something early on for the bowlers. Mentions that last time around, it was a day/night game, so it's all about assessing the conditions. Informs that Mark Chapman is out due to a calf niggle and James Neesham comes in to replace him. Adds that there is a bit of support from the family here which is nice to see and ends by saying that they will look to do their best and better their record against Australia in World Cups.
