… THE RUN CHASE …

Right then, Bangladesh have posted a fighting albeit under-par total on the board but their bowlers will need to be at their absolute best if they are to defend this and upset the hosts. India have a long batting order and with most of the batters in form will fancy themselves to gun this down and maintain their unbeaten record in the tournament. But if Hardik Pandya is unable to take the field and Bangladesh do get early wickets, it could turn out to be quite a contest. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

Ravindra Jadeja is down for a quick chat. He says that the wicket looks very good and there was no turn. Adds that if they play normal cricket, they should get over the line. On his celebration, he says that it was for the fielding coach who gives out the best fielder award after the game and he wants to get his hands on that trophy. Mentions that it looks like a flat wicket and hopes that the batters can get the job done. Also says that when there is no turn for the spinner, you have to bowl wicket-to-wicket and keep the lines tight.

India, on the other hand, will be happy with the way they recovered after that big opening partnership. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah bowled well with the new ball but without any rewards. They suffered a setback when Hardik Pandya got injured just after bowling three balls and Virat Kohli finished the over which got the crowd going. It was once again the magic of Kuldeep Yadav that provided them the crucial breakthrough which was followed up well by Ravindra Jadeja who got two important wickets as well. A scintillating catch from KL Rahul behind the stumps got Siraj his first wicket which put more pressure on the batters and the hosts managed to squeeze in some cheap overs. Then Jadeja produced another stunner to give Bumrah his first wicket. They kept the pressure on with both pacers getting one more wicket each in the death overs while Shardul Thakur who had another off day got one too in the end.

Bangladesh found it a bit hard initially against the Indian pacers but their openers did not throw their wickets away and once their eyes were set started the counter-attack. They targeted Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur and racked up some beautiful boundaries. Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan created a bit of history as they added 93 runs together which is also the highest opening partnership for Bangladesh in ODI World Cups. Tanzid finally showed why he was backed and made a fine fifty but got out just after reaching it. Das lost a couple of partners and then decided to change gears, it worked for him as he brought up his second half-century of the tournament but got out on 66 going for a big one as well. Mushfiqur Rahim and Towhid Hridoy steadied the ship for them after that but the latter struggled throughout and caved under pressure as he made 16 off 35 balls which cost him side a lot of deliveries. Rahim departed after a well-made 38 but the experience of Mahmudullah came in handy as he provided the finishing touches with a decent knock of 46 off just 36 balls and a few lusty blows from Nasum Ahmed and cracking six of the last ball from Shoriful helped them get to a competitive total.

Another good bowling performance from India! They would have hoped to finish even better but will be pleased with the overall effort. Bangladesh will be kicking themselves for not fully capitalising on the start given by their openers and has to settle for 256 runs.

The ball swerves a bit in the air as Mahmudullah tries desperately to keep it out but the ball hits the toe and smashes into the stumps. End of a fighting knock by Mahmudullah and Bumrah gets his second wicket.

Adds that they have some good memories against India and hopes for a good match. Also says that he didn't know they were playing against India for the first time in India after 25 years and ends by informing that apart from Shakib, Taskin Ahmed is also out and Hasan Mahmud replaces him.

PITCH REPORT – Sanjay Manjrekar and Irfan Pathan are pitchside. Sanjay starts by saying that it is a good pitch and there are runs to be scored but the seamers won't mind bowling first and reckons it won't turn much. Irfan then adds that it is a definition of a true pitch where you can bat well and a good seamer can get good purchase as well. Adds that it is a hard pitch and a black soil pitch and it will be a high-scoring game. Also, he adds that the pacers might look to use the bouncer more rather than pitching it up but the lines have to be tight. Sanjay mentions that there won't be any changes to the Indian side and Rohit Sharma himself might bowl if it turns rather than bringing in Ravichandran Ashwin due to the left-handers in the opposition. Irfan rounds off by saying that if anyone will get turn on this pitch, it will be Kuldeep Yadav.

Shubman Gill is down for a quick chat. Gill says that it is very important for him to stick to the basics and have a positive mindset. Adds that the World Cup experience has been great and to play his first game against Pakistan was unreal and hopes that they can keep the winning run going. On Rohit Sharma, he says that it doesn't change the way he plays and Rohit is an aggressive player and plays the way he wants to play. On playing in Pune, he says that given it is a smallish ground, hopefully, they can get good runs on the board for their bowlers to defend. Mentions that it is about not losing early wickets and then being able to get those big runs in the middle overs.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, have been inconsistent in this competition and will be desperate to get back to winning ways after two defeats. Their main issue is their top order and they will hope that Litton Das can find his form back and perform in this game while Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim have always been the ones to take them out of difficult situations. Captain Shakib has a good record against India with both bat and ball and in Mehidy Hasan they now have another decent all-rounder. However, if they really want to challenge the hosts, they might have to do it without Shakib who is a doubt for this game and the pacers will need to step up their game. The Men in Blue are back in action in the World Cup as they take on neighbours Bangladesh to maintain their unbeaten run and make it four wins in a row. Rohit Sharma's side has started their campaign emphatically with three huge wins, the last one being against arch-rivals Pakistan. Skipper's form has been terrific and he has already scored more than 200 runs in the first three games while Kohli is doing Kohli things too. The return of Shubman Gill makes them even stronger while Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have also got runs under their belts. The only thing is that their middle order is yet to be tested properly and it will be interesting to see how they perform when the opportunity arises eventually. Jasprit Bumrah is leading from the front with the ball and whenever the team needs a breakthrough, he has stepped up every time. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja have been brilliant too and the batters are finding it hard to read them on Indian wickets. Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have been playing the supporting role while Hardik Pandya has been a bit inconsistent with the ball. However, they have the luxury of getting Mohammed Shami or Ravichandran Ashwin on the team whose experience could prove useful, while if they need more firepower in batting, Ishan Kishan can come in as well. History also favours the hosts as they have won three out of four matches against the same opposition in ODI World Cups. Bangladesh, on the other hand, after winning their first game of the tournament suffered back-to-back defeats and will be desperate for the two points here. Their top order has been very inconsistent and their decision to drop Tamim Iqbal for Tanzid Hasan hasn't borne much fruit till now while they will expect more from Litton Das at the top as well. They are highly dependent on their experienced players like Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah who have been their best batters so far but they will need much more from the players around them to challenge the hosts. Mehidy Hasan is a valuable player for them who is in good form and can bat at any position without losing much effectiveness. Their bowling is also very spin-heavy, with their skipper and Mehidy enjoying the conditions over here which could be a threat to the Indian batters. Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and Shoriful Islam will need to take a bit more responsibility with the ball and if they want an extra spinner, they can bring in Mahedi Hasan as well who can also come in handy with the bat.
