Indian ecologist Madhav Gadgil gives the background of Gadgil Committee report highlighting the importance of Western Ghats at Loksatta idea exchange event. The eco-sensitive Western Ghats along the west coast of India have been included on the coveted list of the World Heritage Sites, at a meeting of the World Heritage Committee held in Russia. Now that the central government has taken a strong international posture on this issue, it must, along with the concerned state governments, take tangible ground-level measures to implement it,” noted environmentalist Prof. Madhav Gadgil said.
The report should have been published in local languages to seek residents’ views but it was only put up online. The recommendations of the report are crucial for saving ecology and livelihood in the biologically unique region, Gadgil said.
