एखाद्या प्राण्याचं नाव हा जरी छोटासा विषय असला तरी त्यावरून नवीनच शब्दसंपदा तयार होते. पावसाळ्याचे दिवस. भिजून गारठलेलं, कुडकुडणारं मांजराचं पिल्लू मावशीच्या घरात शिरलं. मावशीनं पिल्लाला पुसून कोरडं केलं. बोळ्यानं कोमट दूध पाजून, उबेला पांघरूणाची घडी घातलेल्या खोक्यात ठेवलं. पिल्लू उबेला राहिलं. मावशीच्या घरात रूळलं. घरात, बागेत खेळू-बागडू लागलं. त्याच्या बाललीला पाहाण्यात मावशी रंगून गेली. कधी दुपारच्या वेळी तिच्या घरासमोरून जाल तर मांजर बाळाला मांडीवर गोंजारत बसलेली मावशी दृष्टीस पडेल. तर कधी मांजराला झोपवण्यासाठीचा स्वरचित पाळणाही कानी पडेल.बाळा, जो जो रे.. मार्जारा,मूषककुलसंहारा,बाळा, जो जो रे ॥मावशीचा फोन आला. मी गेलो. म्हणाली, ‘‘इंग्रजीत cat वरून कायकाय शब्द आहेत त्यांची यादी कर.’’ मी सांगायला लागलो तर म्हणाली, ‘‘थांब’’ आणि मांजराला पकडून आणून, स्वतच्या मांडीवर बसवत म्हणाली, ‘‘मोठी हुशार मांजरी आहे हं. हिला ऐकव.’’ (माझ्या Vocabulary बुलेटीनचा हा पहिला मनुष्येतर मेंबर.) आता मावशीच्या मांजरासोबत तुम्हीही cat words ऐका. cat's whiskers (शब्दश अर्थ मांजराच्या मिश्या) -excellent or superior person or thing; to be better than everyone else.उदा. 1) He walked in the party as if he was the cat's whiskers. 2) In her yellow sari and the golden jewelry, she was really the cat's whiskers. to put cat among the pigeons (pigeon म्हणजे कबुतर) - to say or do something that is likely to cause trouble.उदा. 1) The boss told the staff to cancel their holidays, and that really put the cat among the pigeons.2) She put the cat among the pigeons with her comments about the local politician. fat cat - पसेवाला- - a person who earns, or who has a lot of money.उदा. 1) The company director is a fat cat but doesn't care about his employees.2) He's just another fat cat trying to spread his corporate empire, now in India.v catcall - a loud shout expressing disapproval, especially made by people in a crowd. उदा. 1) The catcalls forced the actor to leave the stage.2) The angry crowd gathered on the street and shouted catcalls. feline - like a cat ; connected with an animal of the cat family.उदा. 1) The smiling lady walked with feline grace.2) The leopard belongs to the feline family. has the cat got your tongue ? - बोलत का नाही ? दातखीळ बसली काय ? - Why don't you say anything ?उदा. 1) Well, has the cat got your tongue? I'm waiting for an explanation.2) Why don't you say anything? What's the matter- cat got your tongue? एवढे शब्द सांगून झाले आणि मांजर एकदम टुण्णकन उडी मारून बागेत निघून गेलं. मावशी कौतुकानं म्हणाली, ‘‘बघा. शब्द संपलेलं तिला बरोब्बर कळालं.’’ मी (चेष्टेनं) म्हणालो, ‘‘अगं, पण उजळणी?’’ ‘‘तिला उजळणीची गरज नाही. मोठी हुशार मांजर आहे ती.’’
