टऽरबिड आणि टऽरजिड किंवा फ्लॉन्ट आणि फ्लऊट.. आपल्या सारखेपणामुळे नेहमीच गोंधळात टाकणाऱ्या या आणि अशा कितीतरी शब्दजोडय़ा इंग्रजी भाषेत आहेत..

बऱ्याच दिवसांपूर्वी बघितलेलं एक व्यंगचित्र आठवलं. बंगल्यासमोरच्या हिरवळीवर खुच्र्या टाकून दोन व्यक्ती बसल्यात. दोघांचेही केस लांब, अंगात चट्टय़ापट्टय़ाचे ढगळ कपडे, डोक्यावर टोपी, डोळ्याला गॉगल. दोघेही एकसारखेच दिसताहेत. एक गोंधळलेला वृद्ध त्यांना विचारतोय, ‘‘तुम्हीच जर सुरेश आणि सरिता असाल तर तुमच्यापकी जो सुरेश आहे त्याच्याशी मला बोलायचंय.’’
आज आपण सारखेपणामुळे गोंधळात टाकणाऱ्या काही आंग्ल-शब्द-जोडय़ा अभ्यासणार आहोत. हे शब्द आत्मसात करणं मोठं ‘आव्हान’ आहे. ते स्वीकारण्याचं ‘आवाहन’ मी तुम्हाला करतो.

turbid (टऽरबिड) – (of liquid) full of mud, dirt, etc. so that you can’t see through it; muddy.
उदा. 1) Several different species of fish inhabit these turbid shallow waters.
2) The once-clear waters of the lake have become turbid.

turgid  (टऽरजिड) – 1- (of language, writing etc.) boring, complicated and difficult to understand.
उदा. 1) His books are always full of turgid prose.
2) The editorials in this newspaper are very turgid, imposible to understand for me.
– 2- containing more water than usual; swollen; फुगलेली. 

उदा. The turgid waters of the river Krishna. 

flaunt (फ्लॉन्ट) – to show something you are proud of to other people, in order to impress them. 
उदा.

1) She openly flaunted her affair with the minister.
2) Ever since she joined the gym, she likes to falunt her figure at every opportunity.

flout  (फ्लऊट) – to disobey intentionally (a rule or law)

उदा. 

1) Motorists on the highway, regularly flout the speed limit.
2) The research indicates that 6 out of 10 drivers flout the law by not wearing the helmets.
3) The Orchestra decided to flout tradition, and wear their everyday clothes for the show. 

tortuous (टॉऽरचुअस्)- road or stream full of bends; वळणावळणाचा.

उदा. 1) The group leader warned, “Be careful and don’t overspeed. The tortuous road begins.”
2) No vehicle reaches there. You have to walk the tortuous path over the mountain to the temple.

torturous (टॉऽरचरस) – very painful or unpleasent; पीडादायक.
उदा. 

1) I was in Kokan last mansoon. The greenary was beautiful but the rains torturous.
2) People had romantic ideas about travels on horse back. Actually it is just torturous.

गोंधळ जोडय़ातले हे शब्द तसे अवघड आहेत. दोन्ही शब्द चांगले माहिती असणारे- ज्ञानी. त्यांचा गोंधळ होणार नाही. दोन्हीपकी एकही शब्द माहिती नसणारे-सुखी. त्यांचा गोंधळ व्हायचं कारणच नाही. पण दोन्ही शब्दांची थोडीफार ओळख असणारे-गोंधळी. कोणत्या शब्दाचा अर्थ कोणता? यावरून त्यांचा भरपूर गोंधळ उडणार.. तेव्हा सुखावस्था त्यागून, गोंधळापलीकडच्या ज्ञानावस्थेत प्रवेश करा. तिथे प्रकाश आणि स्पष्टता आहे.
